A practical, design-forward guide from CS Woods
Choosing a wood slab is equal parts art and engineering. It’s the moment where you decide not just how a piece will look, but how it will live—how it will feel to the touch, how it will age, and how it will perform in your home or project space over time. At CS Woods, we’ve helped thousands of customers move from “that one looks beautiful” to “this is the perfect slab for my project.”
If you’re selecting your first slab—or your fiftieth—this guide will walk you through the factors that matter most: purpose, size, species, grain, edge style, moisture content, and finish. By the end, you’ll be equipped to choose a slab that fits your design and project specifications.
Start with Purpose: What Are You Building?
Before you look at species or figure, define the function. A slab for a dining table has different demands than a bathroom vanity or floating shelf. Understanding how the piece will be used helps determine thickness, durability, and finishing approach.
Dining Tables & Conference Tables: Typically benefit from 2" thickness for presence and strength. This stability is critical over longer spans.
Bar Tops & Countertops: Require durability and a finish system that can handle spills, heat, and heavy daily use.
Shelving: Often uses 6/4 material, balancing strength with a lighter visual profile. The edge, whether cut or live, will be a primary focal point.
Desks: Shape is key here, and you need a comfortable working depth. Are you looking to make an impression, be inspired to write the next great American novel, or immerse yourself in the warmth, beauty and biophilic benefits of wood during those long hours?
Once the use is clear, every other decision becomes easier.

Size, Scale, and Layout
Measure your space carefully and think in terms of proportion and dimension. A slab should feel balanced in the room, with comfortable circulation around it.
Length & Width: Consider seating (for tables) or reach (for desks).
Single Slab vs. Bookmatch: A single slab offers uninterrupted flow while bookmatched slabs create symmetry and a mirrored effect.
At CS Woods, many customers bring in their floor plans, sketches, and samples. We can help you visualize scale directly in the warehouse, and chalk your project directly onto slabs in consideration. We also offer templating on site, and can help you with attachment and mounting questions, and logistic installation if you need.
Considerations on the floor:
Species: Color, Character, and Performance - Species choice sets the tone for the entire piece. It affects color, grain, hardness, and how the wood interacts with finishes.
Black Walnut - Deep, rich browns with flowing grain. A designer favorite for luxury interiors. Ages beautifully and pairs well with matte finishes.
Maple - Clean, bright, and smooth. Works well in modern, minimalist spaces.
Elm - Warm and lively with bold grain movement. Great for statement pieces.
White Oak - Light, contemporary, and durable. Subtle grain with excellent performance for high-use surfaces.
Exotics (Sapele, Wenge, Afzelia, etc.) - Offer unique colors and dramatic figure for projects that aim to stand apart.
When in doubt, we can help you consider the surrounding materials—flooring, cabinetry, metal finishes—and choose a species that complements rather than competes.

Grain & Figure: The Soul of the Slab
Grain is where wood becomes art. No two slabs are identical, and the figure can dramatically change the personality of a piece.
Straight Grain: Clean and consistent; ideal for modern or minimalist designs.
Cathedral Grain: Arched patterns common in many hardwoods; classic and balanced. Figured Grain (curl, burl, flame, quarter, etc): Highly expressive and the most unique.
Take time to walk the walls of our warehouse and look at slabs from multiple angles. What feels subtle from one side can come alive from another. This can be one of the biggest advantages of selecting in person at our Denver warehouse, but we are happy to take you on a video tour or work with you via email/texted photos as well.
Choosing an edge - Live Edge vs. Cut Edge
Edge style shapes the overall aesthetic.
Live Edge
Preserves the natural contour of the tree. Organic, sculptural, and deeply connected to the material’s origin. Works beautifully in both rustic and contemporary settings when balanced with clean lines elsewhere.
Cut Edge
Straight, refined edges that highlight the grain without the organic silhouette. This can feel more modern and works well in interiors where crisp geometry is key.
Many projects combine both—live edge on one side, cut edge on the other—offering flexibility in installation and design. This works beautifully on kitchen island extensions, desks, etc.

Moisture Content: The Invisible Factor That Matters Most
A slab can look perfect and still fail if it isn’t properly dried. Wood moves with changes in humidity, and that movement is directly tied to moisture content.
At CS Woods, every slab is Rocky Mountain Kiln Dried (RMKD) by us to approximately 6–8% moisture content—ideal for interior environments in Colorado and similar climates. This means:
The slab is stable and ready to build
Minimal risk of warping, cracking, or movement after installation
No waiting period for additional drying
We check moisture content with professional meters and are happy to verify readings with you in person or virtually. It’s a level of transparency that ensures confidence in your selection. Learn more about our drying process.
Surface & Finish Considerations
The finish determines how the slab will look and feel day-to-day.
- Satin Finishes: Add a soft glow while maintaining a natural feel.
- Matte / Natural Finishes: Preserve the raw look of the wood with minimal sheen. Ideal for modern interiors.
- At CS Woods, we only work with high-durability finish systems: Protection is critical, and we can provide the best type of finish for your space. From kitchen or bar, dining and desk, to commercial spaces with high volume and heavy use, we have the right finish for your wood. At CS Woods, we use and sell finishes that enhance the appearance of the wood while providing durability and flexibility.
Mounting, Bases, and Integration
How the slab is supported is just as important as the slab itself. We offer custom fabricated steel and wood bases, floating hardware, corbels, or clips for wall mounting and industrial brackets. We also have in-depth information about building pony walls and slab mounting, templating for precise fit, and integrated cabinetry or hidden supports.
We can guide you through hardware choices, structural considerations, and installation best practices.
The Value of Selecting in Person
Photos are helpful—but wood is tactile, dimensional, and dynamic. Visiting the CS Woods warehouse allows you to:
Compare slabs side by side
See true color and figure
Get expert input on your specific project
Many customers find that “the one” becomes obvious once they see it in person.

From Slab to Statement Piece
The right slab does more than meet specifications—it elevates the entire project. It becomes the centerpiece of a room, a place where people gather, and often a story that gets told again and again.
At CS Woods, we see this transformation every day. A slab that begins as a raw piece of material becomes a dining table for family gatherings, a bar top for celebrations, or a desk where ideas take shape.
