At CS Woods, we have the privilege of spending our days surrounded by thousands of pieces of wood. Every time I walk through the warehouse, I am reminded that there is no such thing as an ordinary tree. Every slab has its own story, its own movement, its own colors and scars and surprises. Some are quiet and elegant. Some are dramatic. Some are almost impossible to believe came from a tree.
And somewhere in all of that wood is the piece that can make your space feel like your space.
The Moment That Makes the Room
Think about the places where the important things happen.
Your kitchen is where you make dinner, but it is also where everyone seems to gather when there is a party. Your dining table is where you eat, but it is also where you celebrate birthdays, finish homework, open presents and linger over one more glass of wine.
In a business, the conference table is where conversations happen, decisions are made and ideas take shape. The reception desk is the first impression. The office is where someone might spend eight or ten hours a day doing work they care deeply about.

That is why I love the idea of a beautiful wood surface as a focal point. It doesn't have to dominate the room. In fact, the best ones often don't. They simply give your eye somewhere to land.
You notice the grain. You notice the live edge. You notice the color. You notice the way the light moves across the surface. And then you notice how much better the room feels.
The Best Artist Is Mother Nature
We can do a lot with wood at CS Woods. We can mill it, flatten it, sand it, shape it, fill cracks, add beautiful finishes and help transform a slab into exactly the surface you need.
But we didn't create the beautiful part - Mother Nature did.
There is no designer who can sit down at a computer and draw the grain of a 200-year-old walnut tree and have it look quite like the real thing. There is no manufacturer who can reproduce the tiny changes in color, the unexpected curl in the grain or the mark left behind by a branch.
A tree spends its entire life making those decisions for us: Weather. Water. Sunlight. Soil. Seasons. Growth. Injury. Recovery. Time. All of it ends up recorded in the wood.
That is why a beautiful slab is art. It is artwork created by an artist far more patient and talented than any of us. Our job is to reveal it. And when you choose a piece of wood for your home or business, you are bringing a little piece of that artwork into your everyday life.
A Connection to the World Outside
We spend an enormous amount of time inside.
Our homes are increasingly sophisticated. Our offices are carefully designed. Restaurants and hotels are constructed to create very specific experiences. We have incredible technology and materials available to us. But sometimes all of that sophistication can leave a space feeling a little… disconnected. Wood changes that.
There is something fundamentally different about being around a natural material. You can see where it came from. You can feel the grain. You can see the places where the tree grew and changed.
This is part of what makes wood such an important material in biophilic design. We have an innate connection to nature, and bringing natural materials into the places where we live and work helps reconnect us to the world outside our walls.
A wood surface doesn't have to imitate nature. It is nature. And there is something wonderfully grounding about that.
For people who are also thinking more carefully about the materials they bring into their homes and workplaces, solid wood offers another kind of appeal. A properly prepared and finished wood surface is a natural material rather than a synthetic surface trying to look like wood. There is no need to print a wood pattern onto something else to make it beautiful. The beauty is already there.
Luxury Is Getting Exactly What You Want
I think our idea of luxury is changing.
For a long time, luxury was about having more. More space. More things. More expensive materials.
Today, I think there is something much more satisfying about having exactly what you want.
Maybe you want a particular color of walnut because it works beautifully with your cabinets. Maybe you want a dramatic live edge because you want the island to be the first thing people notice when they walk into the kitchen. Maybe you want a very quiet, elegant slab for your office because you don't want the surface to compete with the view outside the window.
Maybe you just walked through our warehouse and fell in love with a piece. That's a perfectly good reason.
At CS Woods, we don't believe you should buy a piece of wood because someone tells you it is the right thing to have. We want you to find the piece that makes you happy.
Your home should make you happy.
Your office should make you happy.
Your restaurant should feel like the place you imagined when you started the business.
The materials you choose should help tell that story.
Wood, Trees and the Gift of Time
There is another part of this story that is important to us: Sustainability.
Trees are remarkable. They grow by taking carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in their wood. Forests provide habitat, clean air, shade, soil protection and countless other benefits.
And unlike so many materials we use, trees can be grown again.
We can plant them.
We can care for them.
We can foster their growth.
We can protect forests and the trees within them as they age.
And when a tree eventually reaches the end of its life, we can sometimes give that tree another chapter.
That is one of the reasons I love working with slabs so much. We aren't creating the character. We are preserving it.
A tree that took decades to grow can become a kitchen island that is used every morning. A slab that experienced a lifetime of seasons can become a conference table where a company's future is discussed. A beautiful piece of walnut can become the surface where your children do their homework or where you sit down every morning to begin your work.
The tree keeps participating in life. And there is something pretty wonderful about that.
Rarer Than Diamonds
We sometimes say around here that wood is more rare than diamonds in this universe.
Obviously, diamonds have extraordinary geological rarity and value. But what we mean when we say it is that there will never be another piece of wood exactly like the one in front of you.
There will never be another tree with exactly that combination of genetics, soil, weather, age, branches, growth patterns and history.
There will never be another slab with exactly that grain.
We are incredibly lucky to live on a planet where trees grow all around us—and where we have the ability to live with them.
We can walk among them. We can admire them. We can plant them and protect them. And we can bring their stories into our homes and businesses.
That is a pretty extraordinary thing.
Come Walk the Woods
This is why we don't really want you to think of coming to CS Woods as "shopping for wood." We want you to come walk the woods.
Our warehouse is a little different from most places where you buy building materials. You can walk through thousands of slabs and see the incredible variety that exists in a single species, let alone across an entire collection of woods from around the world.
You can look at walnut next to elm. You can compare the movement of one slab to another. You can find a piece with a wild live edge or a remarkably calm grain. You can see the color in person instead of trying to judge it from a photograph on a screen.
And while you're walking, we'll tell you some stories.
We'll tell you where the wood came from when we know its history. We'll talk about what makes a particular species special. We'll help you think through how a slab could work for your project. We'll talk about dimensions, moisture content, finishes and fabrication.
And sometimes, we'll simply stand there together and admire a piece of wood because it is beautiful.
That's part of the fun.
