News and Notes: Quartersawn lumber
Planks that are sawn so that the face of the board is at ninety degrees to the growth rings are said to be quarter-sawn. This results in lumber of greater stability since the tension of shrinkage across the growth rings that causes warp is perpendicular to the board in quartersawn material. The pattern of quartersawn lumber is that of parallel lines running the length of the plank, as opposed to the U-shaped parabolas typical of flatsawn wood. In some species, particulary oak, quartersawing reveals medulary rays.
