Spring at Collector's Specialty Woods |
| The woods are full of woods! We have begun expanding into a new warehouse on I-25, south of Pueblo, Colorado. Drying boule cut logs and lumber, as well as stacks and packs of inventory, are on display. It has been great to have an indoor space to work on bigger projects, such as the loading of a container with Alaskan Yellow Cedar and bubinga bound for the big island of Hawaii. The showroom in Carbondale always has a renewing stock of big beautiful blanks and lumber. We would love to show you around. Call for an appointment! This little wood business is growing, and we thank you for making that possible. We look forward to helping with your specialty wood needs in this new building season. Have a great spring! - Kent |

FSC Certification |
| CSWoods is in the final stages of obtaining a FSC Chain of Custody certification! The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a worldwide non-profit organization that is setting standards for the independent certification and labeling of forest products. Certification will give our customers access to products that they can be sure are socially and environmentally responsible. The process of certification, including onsite assessments and much paperwork, has been very educational. We are glad to find a method to express our commitment to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. |
Spotlight on: Argentinian Black Mesquite |
Very stable and beautifully grained mesquite is a great option when looking for a durable and expressive species that will lend lots of character to your furniture, flooring or cabinetry. Mesquite is well above average in density and hardness, and is highly desirable because of its dimensional stability. It is sometimes sold as Texas Ironwood. Mesquite is an extremely hardy, drought-tolerant tree due to its ability to draw water from the water table through its long taproot, some of which have been recorded at up to 190 ft in depth. Argentine Mesquite trees tend to grow more vertical than other mesquite trees leading to nice long straight material. We currently have some beautiful product on hand. Please contact us for more information.

| Quarter Sawn Lumber |
| Planks that are sawn so that the face of the board is at ninety degrees to the growth rings is said to be quarter sawn. This results in lumber of greater stability since the tension of shrinkage across the growth rings that causes warp is perpendicular to the board in quarter sawn material. The pattern of quarter sawn lumber is that of parallel lines running the length of the plank, as opposed to the U-shaped parabolas typical of flat sawn wood. In some species quarter sawing reveals medulary rays. In oak in particular these exposed rays are the figure of quarter sawn material. Quarter sawn stock is also useful in a situation such as a floor, where large amounts of stock need to have a consistent character. The linear patterns of the planks blend in one with another. More wood is consumed to cut quarter sawn stock, and it is more labor intensive but there are advantages that more than outweigh the extra expense. |

(1) This cut pattern produces the truest quarter cut material, but also yields the most waste. (2) This is the most common cut pattern. It produces a good amount of quarter cut along with some rift. (3 & 4) These are other methods of producing some quarter cut material. They also yield a large amount of rift sawn, but have a low waste factor. (5) These are all lumber cross sections revealing the grain structure. The top diagram is quarter sawn, the middle is rift sawn, and the bottom is flat sawn. |
