NEWS - Digging out!
So far, it has been an incredible Colorado winter. The huge amounts of snow and frosty temperatures have made the woodyard a winter wonderland, and despite the drifts and need for arctic weather gear, we are having a great time enjoying the view and clearing paths for the forklift. Throwing a solar kiln beach party has been a constant topic lately, and we are hoping that the next trip to town might bring some sand bags, a palm tree, and maybe some of those little drink umbrellas. We hope that you are all staying warm and comfortable! Happy New Year!

Vacuum Kilned Lumber
With the use of a vacuum kiln, we are presently working on a job that will take only 4 weeks from the harvested tree to the delivery of custom cut, matched material. Although vacuum drying has been used in Europe for many years, it is just now beginning to catch on here in the US. Vacuum kilns use low heat combined with low pressure to produce lumber with good stability characteristics. They yield lumber with better color due to lower kiln temperatures and in significantly shorter time than conventional kilns. It is an excellent method to dry thick (8/4, 12/4 & 16/4) stock. The lumber is evenly dry through the entire piece, which yields far less cupping when resawing. Vacuum kilns are being used by the kind of small scale sawyers that we like to buy our wood from.

HIGHLIGHT: Extra Thick Mahogany
These three mahogany slabs have been in dry storage for 20 years. They are clear and richly colored.
