Wood as a raw material:
Although we are surrounded by trees, it can be difficult and expensive to procure wood to use as a raw material from which to build something. At the moment a given piece of wood is purchased from a lumber yard, it makes a transition from the field of industry to the field of craft. As a craft material, wood is planed, cut to size, shaped, carved, sanded, colored and finished into something useful, beautiful or even precious. The journey to that point of purchase however, is a rough journey.  As the tree makes its way from the forest to the lumber yard it is pushed, pulled, dragged, lifted and hauled by chains, loaders, forklifts and trucks.  The operation of making dry planks out of living trees needs an enormous amount of labor from a diverse group of workmen. Lumberjacks, truckers, lift operators, sawyers, graders, kiln operators, millmen, dealers and  retailers may all deal with your plank before you ever touch it.
CSWoods stocks both hardwood and softwood. Hardwood is a term used to designate wood from deciduous trees while softwood comes from conifer trees such as cedars, douglas-firs, pines, redwoods, and spruces. Usually hardwood is thought to be of a higher density and hardness than softwood, but actually the wood hardness varies considerably in both groups, with a large amount of overlap. Some hardwoods, like balsa, are softer than most softwoods, while yew is an example of a hard softwood. There are about a hundred times as many hardwood species than there are softwoods.
