David Yurman: Luxury Designer Jewelry for Men & Women
Black Walnut Natural Live Edge Tops

On behalf of Yurman Jewelry Stores, a woodworking shop requested a bid for 450 natural-edge American Walnut tops. This wood was to be used as the tops of base cabinets that glass jewelry display cases were placed on. The wood was also to be used for display shelving.  They were looking for flat, one-piece, highly -stable wood with minimal defects for installation anywhere in the world (meaning properly kiln dried). The specifications included various lengths and widths, and a tight delivery-to-store deadline. Yurman was looking to make a quality, sophisticated statement in their stores.

CS Woods sourced American Walnut logs from Michigan, and hand-selected each log on the basis of its quality, length and diameter. CS Wood then carefully milled the logs to specific thickness and kiln-dried the slabs at its Colorado location to 8% moisture content. We refer to this as Rocky Mountain Kiln Dry™; a dryness that results in extremely stable wood that can be placed in any area of the country, or for that matter, the world. Once dried, each slab was re-evaluated for its quality and its ability to deliver on the necessary specs. The slabs were then carefully packed and shipped to Faubion Associates (a commercial woodworking shop), where they were milled, finished and became part of the display cabinets. Yurman was so satisfied with how the tops turned out that they ordered an additional 450 tops.

Nordstorm Department Stores

On behalf of Nordstrom Department Stores, a woodworking shop requested a bid for 50 Hard Rock Maple slabs. This woods was to be used to make display/manicure table tops. They were looking for clear, defect-free, natural-edge, two-inch thick slabs. What made this job somewhat unusual was the fact that the client wanted to have the natural-edges painted white and be acetone resistant which CS Woods was able to accommodate.

CS Woods sourced an over-mature, depleted Sugar Maple tree stand in Northern Michigan that had been earmarked for replacement. CS Woods then selected logs from above the tap holes and milled them into slabs of specified lengths and widths. These slabs were shipped to Colorado to be kiln-dried to 8% moisture content. For this job, CS Woods did the finishing work (leveling, thickness, sanded natural edges, painted the edges white and applied with an acetone resistant finish). We then packed and shipped the tops to each individual store location.

The commercial woodworking shop (Goebel) was thrilled with the reaction the finished product received from Nordstrom executives.

The Gates Family Foundation

On behalf of The Gates Family Foundation, a Gates family member requested a boardroom table top. In addition, the family wanted the top made from a dying tree located on the family estate. CS Woods managed the tree’s removal, and then handled the milling, drying (Rocky Mountain Kiln Dried to 8% moisture content), and delivery of the wood to local craftsmen who manufactured the boardroom table, and also custom stools and counter–top.

Eileen Fisher

Eileen Fisher, a women’s clothing retailer, was looking to use wood to create an impactful and elegant storefront design. Their design staff contacted CS Woods to provide ideas and samples. Within a week, we provided various options, pricing and timing. Eileen Fisher chose an Eco-Teak (green) wood from Sri Lanka that CS Woods had in-stock. We then carefully evaluated each piece in our stock and hand-selected color-matched wood for a more harmonious and elegant look. CS Woods did all the milling and pre-fabrication in order to deliver ready-to-install material to each store location. Eileen Fisher was so impressed with the finished product, the highly-responsive customer service and on-time delivery that it purchased additional storefronts.
